Compliance Update: California Consumer Privacy Act
November 06, 2019
Background Information Services, Inc. (BIS) strives to provide you with important updates to local, state and federal laws and requirements. (Please note that BIS is not a law firm, and cannot provide legal advice.)

You may have seen that California officially passed the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and the deadline to implement several of its requirements is looming. Starting January 1, 2020, the CCPA applies to any "for-profit business that:
  • Does business in the State of California;
  • Collects, or has collected on its behalf, personal information of California residents;
  • Determines (alone or jointly with others) the "purposes and means of the processing" of the personal information of California residents; and
  • Meets at least one of the following criteria:
    • Has annual gross revenues of more than $25 million USD;
    • Obtains for commercial purposes, sells or shares the personal information of more than 50,000 households, devices or California residents; or
    • Derives 50 percent or more of its annual revenue from the sale of California residents' personal information.
    • The entirety of the bill?s detail can be found at:

    • If you have not reviewed the requirements outlined in the CCPA, BIS highly recommends that you review with your legal team or department before January 1, 2020 to determine if any of it applies to your organization and daily operations. BIS has reviewed the CCPA, and we are compliant with requirements that apply in our transactions with you and your applicants.
